Pokémon X/Y Breeding Reference

This is a quick reference guide to breeding mechanics in X and Y. It's the same information found on Bulbapedia, I've just removed the info about the older games to make it easier to read.

Move Inheritance

If both parents know a move that the baby can learn via levelling up, the Pokémon will inherit that move.

Egg Moves will be inherited from either parent.

Pichu will know Volt Tackle if either parent is holding a Light Ball. Volt Tackle cannot be passed down as a normal Egg move.

Inheritance Priority:

  1. Volt Tackle
  2. Mother's Egg Moves
  3. Father's Egg Moves
  4. Inherited level-up moves
  5. Default moveset

Inheriting Stats

Three IVs of different stats will be passed down.

If one parent holds an EV-enhancing item, the related stat will be passed down. This counts as one of the inherited stats. The other two stats will be random.

If both parents hold an EV-enhancing item, only one of the related stats will be passed down and the other won't be. The two random stats will not include the other item-related stat.

If one parent holds a Destiny Knot, five IVs will be passed down instead of three.

Inheriting Nature

Any parent that holds an Everstone will pass down its nature. If both parents hold an Everstone, one of their natures will be passed down at random.

Inheriting Ability

Any Pokémon, including male and genderless Pokémon, can pass down their Hidden Ability when bred with Ditto. Ditto's Ability is irrelevant to inheritance.

Males cannot pass down their Hidden Ability except when breeding with Ditto.

There is an 80% chance that the Ability slot of the female will be passed to the baby. This chance does not apply if Ditto is used as either parent.

Inheriting Poké Ball

The Poké Ball of the female Pokémon (other than a Master Ball and Cherish Ball, which result in the default standard Poké Ball) will be passed down to its offspring.

Breeding Shinies

There is a 6/8192 (~1/1366) chance of hatching a Shiny Pokémon when the parents are from games from different countries.

If the player owns a Shiny Charm, the odds of hatching a shiny Pokémon increase to 3/8192 (~1/2731) for a regularly bred Pokémon, or 8/8192 (1/1024) if the parents are from games from different countries.
